Cancer Stem Cell Laboratory

Welcome to our lab! We are located in the Centre for Biomedical Technology (CTB) of the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM).

We are a team leading research on cancer using stem cells to develop treatments for the disease.
Our team pioneers cancer stem cell research to understand cancer biology and develop targeted therapies. Led by Dr. Carmen Ramírez, we explore how these cells drive tumor progression and resistance, aiming to offer personalized, innovative treatments for better patient outcomes.

IC50 indices

We propose a new method to analyze cell viability assays. This method involves calculating the effective growth rate for both control (untreated) cells and cells exposed to a range of drug doses for short times, during which exponential proliferation can be assumed. The  concentration dependence of the effective growth rate gives a real estimate of the treatment on cell proliferation. A curve fit of the effective growth rate related to concentration yields the concentration corresponding to a given effective growth rate. We use this estimation to calculate the IC50 index and introduce two new parameters (ICr0 and ICrmed) to compare treatment efficacy under different culture conditions or cell lines.

Relapse Prediction

The diagnostic method that we propose is able to integrate the expression of these biomarkers with clinical variables found in standard clinical history to generate a robust relapse prediction model. The application of supervised machine learning methods favors the detection of complex patterns that may not be detected through traditional statistical approaches. In addition, we complement classical machine learning classifiers with a Bayesian probabilistic modeling framework. Unlike conventional approaches that provide point estimates, the Bayesian model explicitly quantifies uncertainty in predictions and model parameters, allowing probabilities to be interpreted as degrees of belief about future cancer relapse

New cancer treatments

Given the patient’s numerous relapses and cellular resistance to current therapies, it is necessary to seek new therapies capable of combatingtumor-initiating cells; therefore, the main objective of this line of research is to eradicate the tumor without causing adverse cellular damage to healthy tissue or to the patient.

Donaciones
